Biography
Dato’ Dr. M. Amir Shah is a veteran clinical oncologist with more than 20 years of experience. He treats all cancers with special clinical interests in breast, lung, colorectal, head and neck, gynaecological, urological, brain and hepatobiliary cancers.
A former student at the Penang Free School, Dato’ Dr. Amir obtained a scholarship to pursue medicine at the University of Leicester in the United Kingdom based on his academic excellence. After graduation, he served as a medical officer at the Penang General Hospital and found his passion in oncology. To pursue his interest in oncology, he completed the Clinical Oncology postgraduate training as a Specialist Registrar for three years at The Christie Hospital, Manchester, one of the largest cancer centres in Europe.
Subsequently, he obtained Clinical Oncology Fellowships from the Royal College of Radiologists, London and Royal College of Surgeons, Ireland. Dato’ Dr. Amir is the first and only oncologist in Penang to obtain both Fellowships from these two prestigious colleges.
Upon his return to Penang, he worked as a Consultant Oncologist at various cancer centres and was with Gleneagles Penang for more than 10 years before joining Icon Cancer Centre in Island Hospital comprising medical oncology, nuclear medicine & PET-CT and radiation oncology as a Medical Director and a Senior Consultant in Clinical Oncology.
He has extensive experience in the latest radiation therapy techniques which includes Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS), Stereotactic Radiotherapy (SRS), Intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), Image Guided Radiotherapy (IGRT), Intracavitary Gynaecology Brachytherapy.
With a passion in clinical research and a desire to be always at the forefront of medical innovations, Dato’ Dr. Amir is actively involved in numerous cancer clinical trials spanning from Phase 1 to 3, both as a Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator across different cancers such as breast, colorectal and lung cancer.
Dato’ Dr. Amir is regularly invited to be a guest lecturer and presenter at many conferences and seminars in Malaysia and the region where he shares his knowledge with fellow doctors and contributes to the oncology sector. He is also an active Fellow of the Faculty of Clinical Oncology, Royal College of Radiologists London, Fellow of the Faculty of Radiologists, Royal College of Surgeons Ireland, member of the European Society of Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ESTRO) as well as a member of the Faculty of Radiology, Academy of Medicine Malaysia since 2011.
Dato’ Dr. M. Amir Shah is able to converse in English, Bahasa Melayu, Hokkien, Bahasa Indonesia and Hindi, enabling him to support his patients and their loved ones in a language they are familiar with.
